Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng - The Commonwealth Farm
Are you fascinated by Vikings? Know very little about them and want to learn more? Or maybe you're already well-versed in Viking history, but have never had a chance to experience the physical remnants of their everyday life? In either case, a trip to Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng (The Commonwealth Farm) is the perfect solution. This reconstructed Viking farm lets you walk in the footsteps of Norsemen who once talked, ate, and prepared for battle here nearly a thousand years ago!
What Is Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng (The Commonwealth Farm)?
Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng, also known as The Commonwealth Farm, is a Viking homestead composed of three buildings, including a longhouse at Stöng. It's not only a site for sightseeing and photography, but also a place where you can literally step into the shoes of medieval Vikings. During your visit, you can dress in traditional Norse clothing, play Viking-era games, try your hand at weaving on a loom, and even debate strategies at a table just like the ones where Viking warriors once planned their battles.
Fun fact: The Commonwealth Farm was featured in Game of Thrones.
Is Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng (The Commonwealth Farm) Original?
The current Commonwealth Farm is not the actual Viking farm that once stood here – but it’s a faithful historical reconstruction. It was built based on the archaeological ruins of the original farm in Stöng, using traditional materials like stone and turf, and following historical layouts in terms of size, structure, and floor plan. The interior design, which could not be preserved from the ruins, is based on historical records of medieval life in Iceland.
The original homestead at Stöng is believed to have been destroyed by the eruption of Mount Hekla in 1104, when volcanic rock buried the entire site.
What Was the Stöng Longhouse and the Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng Homestead?
Although the daily lives of Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng’s residents remain something of a mystery, the Stöng longhouse is mentioned in historical and cultural texts – such as The Saga of Gaukur á Stöng. According to legend, the farm once belonged to Gaukur Trandilsson, a gentle but brave warrior skilled in runes. Sadly, the saga of Gaukur Trandilsson has been lost, adding to the mystery and allure for fans of Icelandic folklore.
The reconstructed Commonwealth Farm is modeled after this very home, excavated from beneath layers of volcanic debris.
